Alex Gay, Chief Marketing Officer, Otter.ai

Otter.ai has appointed Alex Gay as Chief Marketing Officer as the artificial intelligence company looks to expand its positioning beyond AI-powered meeting transcription and build its presence in the enterprise market.

In his new role, Gay will lead Otter.ai’s global marketing strategy across brand, product marketing, demand generation and communications. His mandate will include developing the company’s brand and go-to-market narrative as Otter seeks to position itself as a broader conversational knowledge platform for businesses.

The appointment comes as Otter.ai expands beyond its origins as an AI notetaking service. The company is developing what it calls a Conversational Knowledge Engine, designed to capture information from workplace conversations, organise it into searchable knowledge and use it to trigger AI-powered actions and workflows.

Otter.ai said more than 40 million professionals currently use its services and that its platform has transcribed more than one billion meetings. These figures were disclosed by the company.

Gay joins Otter.ai from Superhuman, formerly Grammarly, where he most recently served as Vice President of Product and Corporate Marketing. In that role, he worked on product storytelling, customer-focused growth and go-to-market execution during the company’s rebrand and expansion into agentic AI products.

Before joining Superhuman, Gay held senior product marketing positions at Adobe. He has more than two decades of marketing experience across technology companies and holds an MBA in Competitive Strategy and Marketing Strategy from Edinburgh Business School.

His appointment comes as AI productivity companies increasingly move beyond standalone assistant functions towards systems capable of connecting information across workplace applications and taking actions on behalf of users.

Otter.ai is following a similar path. Its platform is intended to turn information generated during conversations into searchable intelligence, automated action items and agentic workflows that connect with other workplace tools.

The shift potentially broadens the company’s competitive landscape beyond the AI transcription category. Meeting transcription and summarisation have become increasingly common features across collaboration and productivity platforms, placing greater pressure on specialised providers to differentiate through additional capabilities.

For Otter.ai, enterprise adoption is becoming an important part of that expansion. The company serves individual professionals as well as business customers, including Fortune 500 enterprises, according to its announcement.

Gay said voice remains an underutilised source of organisational knowledge and that AI could help companies extract current decisions, plans and insights from workplace conversations.

Otter.ai co-founder and CEO Sam Liang said Gay’s experience across brand and product marketing would support the company as it scales further into the enterprise segment.

The marketing leadership appointment follows a period of product expansion for Otter.ai. The company recently introduced its Conversational Knowledge Engine alongside capabilities including an expanded Model Context Protocol server, AI Chat and Otter for Desktop.

It has also introduced Live Assist, a real-time AI coaching agent designed to provide guidance while conversations are taking place across platforms including Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft.

The company is backed by investors including Spectrum Equity, Horizon Ventures and Draper Associates and is headquartered in Mountain View, California.

Gay’s appointment puts a dedicated marketing leader behind Otter.ai’s next phase as the company works to change how it is perceived in the market, from a tool primarily associated with meeting notes to an enterprise AI platform built around conversational data and automated workflows.
