Airbnb Announces AI Travel Agent

Airbnb has announced plans to launch an artificial intelligence-powered travel agent in the first half of 2027, introducing a personalised interface designed to help users plan trips, compare accommodation options and manage travel-related services.

The company outlined the upcoming feature in its third-quarter shareholder letter, providing further details about how the AI agent will function and its intended role across the travel booking journey.

Unlike conventional AI chatbots that primarily generate text-based responses, Airbnb's proposed system will create interactive interfaces based on individual user queries.

The technology will draw from hundreds of travel-specific interface components, including maps, photographs, calendars, accommodation comparisons and itineraries, to present information according to a traveller's requirements.

Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky said the company was developing an AI-native experience that would respond to users through customised visual interfaces rather than relying exclusively on conversational text.

The approach is intended to preserve the discovery and comparison process that travellers typically undertake before making reservations.

According to Chesky, 80% of travellers enjoy researching trips, including exploring destinations, reviewing accommodation photographs and discussing options with their travel companions.

He said general-purpose AI agents may be suitable for routine activities such as restaurant reservations and appointment scheduling, but travel planning requires a different approach.

Airbnb's AI agent will also extend beyond the initial booking process.

The company said the system is being developed to assist guests with reservation changes, payment issues, refunds, rebooking and access to round-the-clock safety support.

These capabilities will draw on Airbnb's existing platform infrastructure and its experience managing interactions between hosts and guests.

The company indicated that its direct access to booking information and customer support systems would allow the agent to handle certain travel-related requests that external AI assistants may find difficult to complete independently.

Over time, Airbnb expects to expand the agent's capabilities to cover additional aspects of travel, including hotels, services and experiences.

The planned expansion follows the company's broader efforts to bring accommodation, activities and related services together within its platform.

Airbnb has previously discussed developing a dedicated AI travel assistant, but the latest announcement establishes a more specific launch window for the first half of 2027.

The company has not disclosed an exact release date, pricing arrangements or whether the feature will become available across all markets simultaneously.

The announcement coincided with Airbnb's third-quarter financial results, which showed revenue increasing 19% year-on-year to $4.87 billion.

The company also raised its full-year 2026 revenue growth outlook to the high teens, compared with its earlier forecast of mid-teen growth.

The proposed AI agent represents Airbnb's effort to integrate personalised discovery, booking management and customer support within a single travel-focused interface.

Further details about its availability and implementation are expected closer to the planned launch.
