OpenAI has rolled out ChatGPT Voice to its desktop application, extending its latest voice capabilities to macOS and Windows users. The update enables users to interact with ChatGPT using natural speech while controlling AI-powered workflows and coordinating tasks across OpenAI's desktop experience, marking another step in the company's push to make voice a primary interface for AI-assisted work.
The new feature is powered by GPT-Live, OpenAI's recently introduced family of conversational voice models designed for more fluid, real-time interactions. Unlike earlier voice systems that processed speech in separate stages, GPT-Live can listen and respond simultaneously, allowing users to interrupt naturally, pause during conversations and maintain longer, more contextual interactions.
With the desktop update, ChatGPT Voice integrates with ChatGPT Work and Codex, enabling users to issue spoken commands while AI agents perform tasks in the background. OpenAI said users can start projects, monitor ongoing work, redirect AI agents or ask follow-up questions without switching between conversations manually. On macOS, the feature also supports Appshots, allowing ChatGPT to access on-screen content when permission is granted, making it easier to reference documents, applications or websites during a conversation.
The rollout follows OpenAI's launch of GPT-Live earlier this month, when the company introduced GPT-Live-1 and GPT-Live-1 mini as successors to its previous Advanced Voice Mode. The newer models are designed to reduce interruptions, better understand conversational pauses and deliver more natural speech while leveraging OpenAI's latest reasoning models for complex tasks. The company has also demonstrated capabilities such as real-time language translation and the ability to present visual information during conversations.
According to OpenAI, more than 150 million people already use ChatGPT's voice and dictation features across its platforms. The company views voice as an increasingly important interface for AI, particularly as users begin relying on assistants for more sophisticated workflows beyond basic question answering. During the launch of GPT-Live, OpenAI executives said future AI systems are expected to manage long-running tasks while maintaining natural conversations with users.
The desktop rollout is available globally for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Edu and Enterprise subscribers on both macOS and Windows. The addition also aligns with OpenAI's broader effort to unify experiences across desktop, mobile and web, following recent updates that introduced shared conversations, projects and Work mode across devices.
The update arrives as competition in AI voice assistants continues to intensify. Technology companies including Apple, Amazon and several AI startups have been investing in more conversational digital assistants that can understand context, maintain natural dialogue and execute tasks with minimal user input. OpenAI's latest desktop integration reflects the industry's growing focus on voice-enabled productivity rather than treating conversational AI as a standalone chatbot feature.
