Sandhya Devanathan

OpenAI has appointed Sandhya Devanathan as Vice President for Southeast Asia and Australia, bringing the former Meta executive on board as the artificial intelligence company expands its presence across the Asia-Pacific region.

Devanathan will be based in Singapore and will report to Kiran Mani, Managing Director for Asia-Pacific and Japan at OpenAI. In the newly created position, she will be the company's most senior executive responsible for Southeast Asia and Australia.

Her mandate will cover consumer growth, enterprise adoption, partnerships, regulatory engagement and operations across the region. She will also work on building partnerships across the AI ecosystem and expanding the adoption of OpenAI's products among consumers, businesses, institutions and government organisations.

The appointment follows Devanathan's departure from Meta after more than a decade with the company. She most recently served as Vice President and Head of India and Southeast Asia at Meta, where her responsibilities included bringing together the company's business and revenue priorities while supporting its long-term growth in India.

Devanathan joined Meta in 2016 and was involved in building the company's businesses and teams in Singapore and Vietnam. She also worked on Meta's e-commerce initiatives across Southeast Asia before moving in 2020 to lead the company's gaming business for Asia-Pacific, one of Meta's major global verticals.

In 2022, she was appointed Vice President of Meta India. During her tenure, she oversaw the company's operations in one of its largest user markets while working across its portfolio of platforms and business priorities.

Devanathan brings more than two decades of experience spanning technology, banking and payments. Her international career has included leadership responsibilities across several Asian markets, giving her experience in both consumer-facing technology businesses and commercial operations.

Her move comes as OpenAI strengthens its leadership presence across Asia. The company has been expanding its regional teams as adoption of generative AI grows among consumers and enterprises. Devanathan's appointment also follows the recent addition of Prabhjeet Singh as OpenAI's India head.

OpenAI has also been expanding its commercial leadership globally. Earlier this month, the company appointed Dali Rajic as Chief Revenue Officer to lead its global revenue organisation. OpenAI said its products now reach more than one billion weekly active users and more than two million businesses globally.

With Devanathan taking responsibility for Southeast Asia and Australia, OpenAI is placing dedicated leadership around consumer adoption, enterprise growth, partnerships and regulatory engagement as it builds its operations across the wider Asia-Pacific market.
