Cashfree Payments has launched Relay, an AI agent platform designed to automate payment operations for small and medium-sized businesses, as the fintech company expands its use of artificial intelligence beyond payment processing into operational workflows.
Relay functions as an AI "superagent" supported by specialised agents that can manage individual payment-related tasks. The platform currently includes agents for cart recovery, failed payment recovery, subscription dunning, cash-on-delivery confirmation and dispute response. Businesses can activate the agents through their existing Cashfree dashboard.
According to Cashfree, seven out of 10 SMBs currently handle payment operations manually, with businesses spending as much as 60 hours a week managing these activities. Relay is designed to automate repetitive processes such as following up on abandoned carts, retrying failed transactions, confirming COD orders and responding to disputes.
The platform uses transaction information already available within Cashfree, including orders, refunds, disputes, delivery details and previous payment attempts. Its agents share a common memory, allowing information gathered during one workflow to be used across other payment operations.
For instance, Relay's Cart Recovery Agent can analyse a customer's cart, order history, location and previous payment attempts before initiating a follow-up. Depending on the situation, the system can send a new payment link through WhatsApp or contact the customer through a voice call. The platform then records whether the transaction was recovered, declined or received no response.
Cashfree has retained human approval for sensitive actions. Relay requires approval before an agent moves money or contacts a customer. Businesses can also switch individual agents on or off, while actions and approvals are documented and can be exported.
The company said business data used by Relay remains within Cashfree's infrastructure and is not shared with external AI providers. The platform currently supports AI technologies from providers including Sarvam, Bolna and Osvi, while businesses can also bring their own AI systems.
Beyond its pre-built agents, Relay allows businesses to describe a payment workflow in plain language and create a customised agent. Cashfree said users can review the resulting agent before deploying it, reducing the need to manually configure workflow builders or node-based automation systems.
Relay has been used by Cashfree merchants in beta since May. The company claims the platform can reduce time spent on payment operations from up to 60 hours per week to around 45 minutes, although this is a company-reported figure rather than an independently verified performance benchmark.
The launch builds on Cashfree's broader push into AI-led commerce. The company previously introduced Agentic Payments, which enables merchant AI agents to manage transactions within conversational interfaces, followed by Cashfree Here, its payments extension for AI applications.
