Island Computing to Launch Sovereign Cloud in India

Island Computing is set to make its fully managed sovereign cloud platform generally available in India on August 15, targeting enterprises, government organisations and technology companies looking to run AI and other critical workloads within the country.

The Bengaluru-based technology company positions the platform as India's first fully managed sovereign cloud built from the ground up domestically. Its infrastructure, including data centres, hardware, cloud operations, control and data planes, identity systems and audit logs, is designed to operate within India and under Indian jurisdiction.

The platform has been developed for workloads including multi-tenant SaaS applications, agentic AI execution and regulated artificial intelligence involving Indian data. Island Computing said its infrastructure is designed to be highly available, low-latency and fault-tolerant across data centres.

At launch, the platform will use a distributed control and data plane alongside a microVM-based hypervisor designed to provide tenant isolation. According to the company, users will be able to provision an "Island", its term for an isolated computing environment, in around 90 seconds and deploy production-grade applications in approximately three minutes.

Network topology, tenant isolation, autoscaling, observability and identity management are configured by the platform, reducing the amount of infrastructure that customers have to assemble and operate themselves.

The company is also positioning cost efficiency as part of its offering. Island Computing claims its platform delivers 30% lower costs on its published benchmark workload compared with equivalent configurations in Amazon Web Services' Mumbai region, before committed-use or enterprise discounts. The figure is based on the company's own benchmark and may vary depending on individual workloads and configurations.

The launch comes as data sovereignty and domestic AI infrastructure receive increased attention in India. Businesses operating in regulated industries are facing requirements around data protection, localisation, security and incident reporting, while the expansion of generative and agentic AI is increasing demand for computing infrastructure capable of handling sensitive data.

Island Computing said its architecture has been developed with India's Digital Personal Data Protection framework, Reserve Bank of India data localisation requirements, Securities and Exchange Board of India cloud advisories and CERT-In's incident-reporting requirements in mind.

The company is targeting sectors including banking and financial services, healthcare, telecommunications, the public sector, IoT, SaaS, video and gaming, alongside businesses developing agentic AI applications. Partner onboarding is scheduled to begin on August 15.

Island Computing was founded by technology executives with experience building large-scale systems at companies including Amazon, AWS and Google. Vishal Sirohi serves as co-founder and CEO, while Bhavik Kothari is co-founder and CTO.

The company describes its broader strategy as building AI-native infrastructure that reduces the complexity associated with managing separate compute, networking, security and infrastructure components.

With its August 15 rollout, Island Computing is entering a cloud market dominated by global hyperscalers while seeking to differentiate itself through domestic infrastructure, jurisdictional control and infrastructure designed for modern AI workloads.
