Google Tests Direct Flipkart Shopping

Google is testing a new shopping experience in India that allows select users to purchase products from Flipkart through Gemini and AI Mode in Search, moving its artificial intelligence interfaces closer to completing transactions rather than only helping consumers discover products.

Under the limited test, some Flipkart product listings appearing within Gemini and AI Mode display a "Buy" button. Selecting the option opens a Flipkart-branded checkout flow within Google's AI interface, reducing the need for users to move between different apps or websites during the purchase journey.

The test is currently available to a limited group of users and covers selected products, including smartphones, electronics and mobile accessories, according to reports. The feature has not yet been rolled out broadly across India.

The experiment builds on Google's wider push into agentic commerce, where AI systems can assist consumers across multiple stages of shopping, from product discovery and comparison to checkout.

Google has already confirmed that Flipkart is among the merchants partnering with the company to offer agentic shopping experiences to Indian consumers. The company has also been expanding shopping capabilities across Gemini and AI Mode, including product listings, comparison tables, pricing, reviews and inventory information.

A key part of Google's broader commerce strategy is the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard developed to allow AI agents, retailers and payment providers to communicate across the shopping journey. Flipkart was among more than 20 companies that endorsed UCP when it was introduced.

Google's implementation of UCP is designed to enable consumers to move from product discovery to purchasing within conversational experiences such as Gemini and AI Mode. Retailers remain the merchant of record, while the protocol supports their existing business and checkout infrastructure.

The India test comes as Google expands the role of Gemini across commerce. Earlier this year, the company introduced shopping features in Gemini in India that surface shoppable listings, prices, comparisons and places to buy. AI Mode also provides product recommendations using information from Google's Shopping Graph.

For Flipkart, the test adds another potential discovery and transaction channel ahead of India's festive shopping period. Flipkart has announced that its Big Billion Days 2026 sale will begin with early access on October 8.

The limited rollout signals how AI-powered search interfaces are beginning to extend beyond answering shopping queries, with Google testing whether the same conversational experience can also carry users further into the transaction process.
