HDFC Bank Launches GenAI Platform 'Neev'

HDFC Bank is accelerating its artificial intelligence strategy with the rollout of its proprietary generative AI platform, Neev, as the country's largest private sector lender expands AI adoption across customer service, lending, operations and internal business functions.

The platform has been developed as an enterprise wide AI foundation that enables teams across the bank to build, deploy and manage AI powered applications while maintaining governance, security and regulatory compliance. According to the bank, Neev is designed to provide a common technology layer for generative AI initiatives rather than functioning as a standalone AI tool.

Built by a dedicated AI engineering team at HDFC Bank's Gurugram technology centre, Neev represents the bank's broader push to develop core technology capabilities in house. The platform offers access to language models, orchestration tools, deployment capabilities and governance controls, allowing business units to develop AI applications without building individual infrastructure from scratch.

Ramesh Lakshminarayanan, Group Head of Information Technology and Chief Information Officer at HDFC Bank, said the bank believes future financial institutions will increasingly operate as technology companies. He noted that developing proprietary engineering talent and AI platforms is becoming essential for long term competitiveness in banking.

The lender is integrating Neev across multiple business areas, including customer service, lending, wealth management and operational workflows. HDFC Bank said the platform is expected to improve employee productivity, automate repetitive processes and enable faster decision making while delivering more personalised customer experiences.

Alongside Neev, the bank has also developed an in house real time fraud monitoring system to strengthen cybersecurity. Unlike many financial institutions that rely on third party solutions, HDFC Bank said it has built its own streaming platform to detect fraudulent activity in real time, reflecting its broader strategy of increasing ownership over critical technology infrastructure.

Artificial intelligence is also beginning to reshape workforce deployment within the organisation. In its latest annual report, HDFC Bank said technology driven efficiencies are enabling it to redeploy employees from backend operations to customer facing roles rather than reducing headcount. Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Sashidhar Jagdishan said automation allows employees to focus on delivering better customer engagement and advisory services.

The rollout of Neev reflects a wider trend across India's banking industry, where AI is moving beyond pilot projects into enterprise wide deployment. Banks are increasingly investing in proprietary AI capabilities to improve operational efficiency, strengthen fraud prevention, enhance regulatory compliance and personalise customer interactions while maintaining strict governance standards.

For HDFC Bank, developing its own AI platform also reduces dependence on external AI providers while providing greater flexibility to customise applications for banking specific use cases. The bank's investment aligns with its long term digital transformation strategy, which combines cloud infrastructure, automation, analytics and artificial intelligence to modernise banking operations.

Industry observers note that financial institutions are increasingly viewing AI platforms as strategic infrastructure rather than isolated technology investments. Enterprise AI systems that combine governance, security and scalable deployment are expected to become critical as banks expand the use of generative AI across customer engagement, risk management and internal operations.

With Neev now serving as the foundation for its AI initiatives, HDFC Bank is positioning artificial intelligence as a core capability that supports innovation across business functions while strengthening operational resilience and long term competitiveness in an increasingly digital banking landscape.
