India Is Now ChatGPT's Largest Market

India has emerged as ChatGPT's largest market globally in terms of weekly active users, with its user base doubling since January 2026, according to OpenAI India Managing Director Prabhjeet Singh.

Speaking to The Economic Times, Singh attributed the growth to increasing adoption of artificial intelligence across everyday activities, professional workflows and business operations, as users move beyond experimenting with the technology to applying it to specific tasks.

The development marks a change in India's position within OpenAI's global user base. During an earlier visit to the country, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had identified India as the company's second-largest market and one of its fastest-growing regions.

In February 2026, OpenAI disclosed that India had more than 100 million weekly ChatGPT users. However, the company has not provided an updated absolute user count alongside its latest announcement.

Singh said the pace of growth indicated that users were finding more relevant and practical applications for ChatGPT.

The company is also observing changes in how Indian consumers interact with AI platforms. Voice-based interactions are becoming an important consideration, particularly among users who prefer communicating in Hindi and other regional languages rather than English.

OpenAI is consequently focusing on improving multilingual capabilities, voice experiences and accessibility across Android devices, including smartphones with limited memory and processing capacity.

The company's India strategy also includes its lower-priced ChatGPT Go subscription, aimed at making paid AI features accessible to a broader segment of users.

Beyond individual consumers, OpenAI is witnessing increased enterprise adoption as businesses move from initial experiments and pilot projects towards larger deployments.

Singh identified enterprises, global capability centres and startups as important segments for adoption, with companies exploring AI applications across customer engagement, internal operations and software development.

He cited JioHotstar and Cars24 among organisations using OpenAI technologies. India is also emerging as a significant market for Codex, the company's AI coding product, with developer adoption extending beyond major metropolitan centres.

For smaller businesses, ChatGPT is being used for activities such as preparing customer communications, marketing content and managing routine business requirements.

OpenAI is also expanding its commercial activities in India through advertising and payments-related initiatives. The company is working with Razorpay to help Indian brands advertise on ChatGPT, while further announcements concerning Unified Payments Interface integration are expected in the coming weeks.

On infrastructure, OpenAI is examining additional computing capacity to address enterprise requirements related to data residency, security and deployment.

The company is also engaging with government agencies and financial institutions on cybersecurity, AI safety and the protection of critical infrastructure.

While India's user growth indicates expanding adoption, OpenAI has not disclosed corresponding revenue figures or detailed country-level usage patterns.

The latest development places India at the centre of OpenAI's efforts to expand multilingual access, enterprise deployment and commercial applications of conversational AI.
