L&T's Vyoma.AI

Vyoma.AI, the artificial intelligence cloud and data centre business of Larsen & Toubro (L&T), has commenced construction of a 52 megawatt (MW) AI-ready data centre in Chennai as part of its plans to expand computing infrastructure in India.

The company held a groundbreaking ceremony on October 28, marking the next phase of development at its planned gigawatt-scale AI Factory campus in Chennai.

The new facility is being developed to accommodate high-density computing workloads associated with artificial intelligence applications, cloud services and large-scale data processing.

According to the company, the data centre will incorporate direct-to-chip liquid cooling technology to manage heat generated by high-performance computing systems. The cooling approach is designed to address the thermal requirements of infrastructure used for intensive AI workloads.

Vyoma.AI also plans to integrate renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies into the facility's operations as part of its focus on developing lower-carbon digital infrastructure.

The Chennai campus already houses an operational 30 MW data centre equipped with AI computing clusters. The company has also reported 150 MVA of power infrastructure readiness at the site to support its expansion plans.

Prashant Chiranjive Jain, Managing Director of Vyoma.AI, said the development was intended to strengthen India's digital infrastructure and address the computing requirements emerging from increased AI adoption.

Jain added that the facility was being designed to provide the performance, scalability and resilience required for newer AI workloads while incorporating technologies aimed at reducing the environmental impact of data centre operations.

The upcoming facility will cater to hyperscale cloud providers, neocloud operators and artificial intelligence companies requiring infrastructure capable of supporting substantial computing demand.

The project forms part of L&T's broader strategy to develop more than 250 MW of data centre capacity across India.

Through Vyoma.AI, the company provides services including sovereign cloud infrastructure, GPU-as-a-Service, hyperscale colocation and other data centre solutions.

The expansion comes as AI development and deployment increase demand for specialised computing facilities. Unlike conventional enterprise workloads, AI training and inference applications can require concentrated computing resources, supported by substantial electrical capacity and advanced cooling systems.

These requirements are influencing infrastructure investments by data centre operators seeking to accommodate higher equipment densities and changing customer demand.

For enterprises deploying AI applications, the availability of domestic computing infrastructure is also relevant to decisions concerning data residency, operational requirements and access to processing capacity.

With the latest project, L&T is adding to its existing Chennai infrastructure while working towards its wider data centre capacity target.

The company has not disclosed the investment value, expected completion date or customer commitments for the new 52 MW facility.
