Apple Health Meets ChatGPT

OpenAI's new Health integration for ChatGPT is drawing attention not only for its ability to analyze personal health information but also for the privacy questions it raises. The feature, which allows users to connect Apple Health data and medical records directly to ChatGPT, has reignited discussions around how sensitive health information is handled as AI assistants become more deeply integrated into everyday life.

The new Health capability enables eligible users to securely connect Apple Health data, medical records from supported healthcare providers, and select third-party health platforms to ChatGPT. Once connected, users can ask the chatbot to summarize laboratory reports, identify trends in sleep and activity data, explain medical terminology, compare health metrics over time and prepare questions for upcoming doctor visits. OpenAI says the feature is available to logged-in users aged 18 and above across Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans in supported regions.

While the feature expands ChatGPT's utility in personal healthcare management, privacy experts note that it introduces another layer of data sharing. Unlike Apple's native AI architecture, which is designed to process many requests directly on the device or through its Private Cloud Compute infrastructure, connecting Apple Health to ChatGPT requires users to explicitly share health information with OpenAI's systems before analysis can take place.

OpenAI has stated that connected Apple Health information, medical records and conversations that use this data are not used to train its foundation models or target advertisements. The company also says Health conversations receive additional encryption protections beyond the default encryption applied to ChatGPT conversations. Users retain control over which health accounts they connect and can choose whether ChatGPT requests permission each time it accesses health information or receives ongoing authorization.

However, privacy specialists point out that these safeguards do not eliminate the fact that sensitive information leaves Apple's ecosystem once users enable the integration. Apple Intelligence, by comparison, processes many supported requests locally and relies on Private Cloud Compute only when additional computing power is required, limiting the amount of personal data shared externally.

The debate reflects broader industry efforts to balance AI-powered personalization with data privacy. Technology companies are increasingly integrating AI into healthcare, fitness and wellness applications, giving users more intelligent insights into personal information. At the same time, regulators and privacy advocates continue to emphasize transparency, user consent and responsible handling of health data, one of the most sensitive categories of personal information.

OpenAI has also clarified that ChatGPT cannot modify or write information back to Apple Health. The integration is read-only and is intended to help users better understand their health information rather than replace professional medical advice. The company recommends verifying AI-generated insights with qualified healthcare providers, noting that connected records may occasionally be incomplete or outdated.

The rollout comes as AI companies continue expanding health-focused features beyond conversational assistance. OpenAI has said more than 300 million people use ChatGPT for health-related questions each week, making healthcare one of the platform's fastest-growing use cases. By allowing users to securely connect structured health information, the company aims to reduce the need for repeatedly uploading medical documents while making it easier to interpret complex records.

As AI becomes increasingly embedded in personal wellness applications, the discussion is shifting beyond what these systems can do to how they manage highly sensitive information.
