Spotify has begun rolling out a conversational AI assistant that allows eligible Premium subscribers to interact with the streaming platform using natural language, marking the company's latest effort to make music discovery and content recommendations more personalised through artificial intelligence.
The new feature, called "Talk to Spotify," enables users to type or speak requests directly within the Spotify app instead of relying on traditional search or browsing. Users can ask the assistant to play music based on moods, discover unfamiliar artists, learn more about songs, podcasts and audiobooks, or even explore their own listening history through conversational prompts.
Initially launching in beta, the AI assistant is available to Premium subscribers aged 18 and above in the United States, Ireland and Sweden. The feature supports English on both Android and iOS devices, with Spotify indicating that broader availability could follow based on user feedback.
Unlike conventional voice assistants that execute simple playback commands, Spotify's new AI experience is designed to support back and forth conversations. Users can refine recommendations by asking follow up questions such as requesting newer songs, changing the mood of a playlist or adding specific artists while the assistant remembers the context of the conversation.
The assistant also leverages Spotify's understanding of an individual's listening behaviour. It can answer questions such as when a listener first played a particular song, identify frequently streamed genres, explain album releases, recommend similar artists or provide additional context around podcasts and audiobooks. The company says these personalised interactions are powered by users' existing playlists, favourite artists and listening history.
Spotify has not disclosed the specific large language models powering the assistant. However, the company confirmed that it uses a combination of its own AI technologies alongside models from multiple providers, selecting whichever model is most suitable for a particular task.
The launch builds on Spotify's expanding AI portfolio, which already includes AI DJ, AI Playlist generation and integrations with third party AI platforms. Rather than introducing a standalone chatbot, the company has embedded conversational AI directly into the Home and Now Playing sections of the app, making the experience part of everyday listening.
Industry observers view the rollout as part of a broader shift across consumer technology platforms, where conversational interfaces are increasingly replacing traditional search and navigation. Music streaming services are moving beyond recommendation algorithms toward AI assistants capable of understanding intent, maintaining context and responding with personalised suggestions.
Spotify said users will be able to perform actions such as adding tracks to queues, following artists, saving songs and discovering content without leaving the conversation. The assistant can also help listeners explore music they may not have encountered before by combining contextual prompts with personal listening preferences.
As with other beta AI features, Spotify acknowledged that responses may not always be accurate and said the system will continue improving through user feedback. The company emphasised that the rollout represents an early stage in its broader effort to create a more interactive and personalised listening experience.
The introduction of "Talk to Spotify" reflects how AI is becoming central to digital media experiences. As streaming platforms compete to increase engagement, conversational AI is emerging as a new interface for helping users navigate vast libraries of music, podcasts and audiobooks through dialogue rather than search menus. With the latest rollout, Spotify joins a growing list of technology companies using generative AI to transform how consumers discover and interact with digital content.
