OpenAI Releases GPT-6.1 Terra

OpenAI has introduced GPT-6.1 Terra, a new artificial intelligence model designed for computer-based tasks, visual reasoning, coding and professional workflows, with standard API pricing 50% lower than its predecessor, GPT-5.6 Terra.

Announced on October 26, the model is being rolled out through ChatGPT Work, Codex and the OpenAI API. It is available to eligible Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu subscribers, subject to account access and workspace settings.

The release focuses on enabling AI systems to interpret information displayed on computer screens and perform actions across browsers, desktop applications and connected tools. OpenAI said the model is designed to support activities such as reviewing documents, interacting with software interfaces and carrying out multi-step workflows.

GPT-6.1 Terra also supports writing and software development tasks, positioning it as an option for organisations deploying AI agents across routine business operations.

According to OpenAI's published pricing, the model costs $1 per million input tokens, $0.05 per million cached input tokens and $5 per million output tokens. These rates are 50% below the standard API pricing of GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol.

The company has provided the model through its API under the identifier gpt-6.1-terra, allowing developers to integrate its capabilities into applications and automated workflows.

OpenAI has also reported improvements in the model's performance on computer-use and coding evaluations.

On its Agents' Last Exam benchmark, the company said GPT-6.1 Terra performed 15 percentage points better than GPT-5.6 Terra at medium reasoning effort while operating at approximately one-third of the cost.

OpenAI further reported that the model completed evaluated tasks more than three times faster on average than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol. These figures are based on company-reported testing and should not be interpreted as guaranteed results across all workloads.

On Terminal-Bench 4.0, OpenAI reported a task-completion score of 50.3% at maximum reasoning effort, compared with 21.5% for GPT-5.6 Terra.

The model supports a context window of approximately 1.05 million tokens, enabling it to process extensive documents, codebases and information across longer workflows.

For enterprise users, the release provides another option for deploying AI in software development, document processing, application navigation and operational automation.

However, the model is available within ChatGPT Work and Codex rather than standard ChatGPT conversations. API usage is billed separately from ChatGPT subscriptions.

OpenAI has also identified cybersecurity-related capabilities requiring additional deployment safeguards under its Preparedness Framework.

The rollout comes as AI developers continue expanding models designed to interact directly with software systems, with pricing, execution reliability and security controls becoming important considerations for enterprise adoption.
