OpenAI has expanded its Academy with role-based learning paths aimed at helping workers, developers, organisational leaders, educators and college students build practical artificial intelligence skills.
The expanded portfolio organises courses around four areas: Apply AI at Work for knowledge workers, Build with AI for developers, Lead AI Adoption for organisational leaders, and Teach and Learn with AI for educators and students. The courses are free, self-paced and available globally to people with a ChatGPT account, according to OpenAI.
Rather than focusing only on AI concepts, the courses use hands-on activities based on workplace, technical and educational tasks. Learners who complete a course and score at least 80% on its assessment can receive an OpenAI Academy badge. OpenAI clarifies that these badges and pathway completion certificates are not the same as formal OpenAI certifications.
For knowledge workers, the Apply AI at Work pathway covers AI fundamentals before moving into repeatable workflows, capability selection, review points and working with agents. OpenAI says the courses are intended to help users decide what to delegate to AI while retaining oversight of the work.
The Build with AI pathway targets developers and technical teams using Codex and the OpenAI API. Courses cover areas including software development workflows, evaluations, AI-powered product development and operating systems with appropriate oversight.
OpenAI has also introduced AI Leadership, a three-hour course for people responsible for AI strategy and organisational adoption. It covers identifying business priorities, assigning ownership, governance, stakeholder alignment and developing an initial AI strategy and roadmap.
Education has a separate learning track. AI for Educators is a 45-minute course covering lesson planning, activities, assessments and communications using materials teachers are permitted to use. Educators are expected to review AI-generated material against their learning objectives and retain responsibility for what is ultimately used.
The 45-minute AI for College Students course focuses on study planning, group projects, reviewing drafts and preparing for applications and interviews. It also emphasises reviewing AI responses critically and following institutional rules.
Organisations can use different Academy pathways for different employee groups rather than applying a single training programme across the workforce. OpenAI has also published a deployment guide covering course rollout, executive sponsorship, participation and measurement.
The expansion positions OpenAI Academy as a broader skills platform as businesses and educational institutions look for structured ways to train people to use AI in everyday work.
