OpenAI and Jony Ive's First AI Hardware

OpenAI is preparing to enter the consumer hardware market with a screenless AI companion designed for the home, according to multiple reports citing people familiar with the project. Unlike expectations that the company would introduce a smartphone or wearable, the first device is reportedly a portable smart speaker with mechanical movement, cameras and sensors that aims to create a more natural interaction with users.

The device, which is still under development, is expected to become the first major consumer hardware product resulting from OpenAI's collaboration with former Apple Chief Design Officer Jony Ive. The AI startup acquired Ive's io Products earlier this year in a deal valued at approximately $6.5 billion, bringing together hardware design and generative AI expertise to create a new category of AI powered devices.

According to the reports, the product resembles a smart speaker but is being positioned internally as a new type of AI first computer. It is expected to operate without a display, relying instead on voice interactions powered by ChatGPT's latest GPT Live technology. The system is designed to help users manage smart home devices, answer questions, play media, send messages and perform a wide range of everyday tasks through conversational AI.

One of the distinguishing features of the reported device is its ability to move. Sources say it incorporates mechanical elements that allow it to physically shift or respond during conversations, giving it a more lifelike presence than conventional smart speakers. OpenAI reportedly believes that personality and natural interaction will be the product's defining characteristics rather than its hardware specifications.

The AI companion is also expected to include cameras and environmental sensors that allow it to understand its surroundings. Combined with user preferences and contextual information, these capabilities could enable the system to anticipate needs, offer proactive assistance and personalise responses over time. The reports suggest that the device is intended to function as an ambient AI assistant rather than simply responding to voice commands.

The hardware initiative represents an important strategic expansion for OpenAI beyond software and cloud based AI services. While ChatGPT has become one of the world's most widely used AI applications, the company is now exploring dedicated hardware designed specifically for AI interactions. Industry observers view the move as an attempt to establish a new computing interface built around conversational intelligence rather than traditional screens and keyboards.

The reported launch also places OpenAI in more direct competition with established consumer technology companies including Apple, Amazon and Google, all of which already offer smart speakers and AI enabled home devices. However, OpenAI is reportedly positioning its product as something distinct from existing voice assistants by focusing on continuous conversation, contextual awareness and emotional interaction rather than simple voice commands.

Development of the product has also drawn attention following Apple's legal action against OpenAI over alleged hardware related trade secrets. OpenAI has denied the allegations, and reports indicate the company believes its screenless AI companion differs fundamentally from Apple's existing hardware products.

Although the company has not officially confirmed the product, reports suggest OpenAI could unveil the device later this year, with commercial availability expected in 2027. The AI companion is believed to be the first of several hardware products under development as the company expands its ambitions beyond software into consumer devices.
