HSBC to Set Up Global AI Centre of Excellence

HSBC has announced plans to establish a Global Artificial Intelligence Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Singapore in the second half of 2026, reinforcing its commitment to expanding AI capabilities across its worldwide operations. The initiative will focus on developing scalable AI solutions for wealth management, treasury services and digital payments while creating more than 100 specialist roles in artificial intelligence.

The bank said the new centre will serve as a global hub for AI innovation, building technologies that can be deployed across its international network. Initial priorities include enhancing customer wealth conversations through AI, developing agentic treasury solutions for corporate clients and advancing AI-enabled digital payments. These capabilities are expected to improve customer experiences while maintaining human oversight and governance in financial decision-making.

HSBC plans to recruit more than 100 AI specialists who will work alongside Chief AI Officer David Rice and teams across wealth management, global payments and other business units. The recruitment drive will span disciplines including natural language processing, data science, AI governance and human-centred design. The bank also intends to collaborate with educational institutions and government agencies in Singapore to strengthen the local AI talent ecosystem.

The announcement comes as global financial institutions accelerate investments in generative AI and automation to improve operational efficiency and customer engagement. HSBC said it views AI as an opportunity to become a more responsive and connected bank by equipping employees with tools that enhance productivity while supporting more personalised customer interactions.

Group Chief Executive Georges Elhedery said the Singapore-based Centre of Excellence will help drive HSBC's global AI vision by enabling employees to use AI to create personalised customer experiences that can be delivered safely, in real time and at scale. He added that human judgement, accountability and responsible governance would remain central to the bank's AI strategy.

The CoE announcement builds on HSBC's broader AI expansion. Earlier this year, the bank appointed David Rice as its first Chief AI Officer and entered a multi-year partnership with Google Cloud to accelerate AI deployment across its operations. HSBC has also been introducing AI-powered tools for relationship managers, enabling real-time market insights and more personalised investment recommendations for clients. In its corporate and institutional banking business, AI agents are already supporting customer enquiries across products and markets, with the bank reporting shorter customer resolution times since the technology was introduced.

Singapore has emerged as a strategic location for AI investment due to its digital infrastructure, regulatory environment and access to skilled technology talent. HSBC said the new Centre of Excellence reflects its confidence in Singapore's role as a global financial and innovation hub, where AI solutions developed locally can be scaled across international markets.

Industry-wide, banks are increasingly investing in AI to modernise customer service, automate back-office operations, strengthen fraud detection and support wealth advisory services. HSBC's latest investment signals that financial institutions are moving beyond pilot programmes and embedding AI into core business functions while placing greater emphasis on responsible deployment and governance.

With the new Centre of Excellence, HSBC aims to strengthen its in-house AI capabilities while creating a dedicated innovation hub that can support enterprise-wide transformation. The initiative also reflects the growing competition among global banks to attract AI talent and develop technologies that improve both customer experiences and operational efficiency.
