

Google has introduced significant enhancements to its Gemini AI chatbot, enabling a more personalized and private user experience through two key features: automatic memory and Temporary Chats.
Gemini’s new personal context setting now allows the chatbot to remember users’ past conversations automatically—without needing explicit prompts—making exchanges more contextually relevant and human-like. This update brings Gemini closer to mimicking a conversation partner rather than a stateless tool.
At the same time, Google has added Temporary Chats, an incognito-style mode designed for private or one-off interactions. These chats are not saved in the user’s history, nor are they used to train Gemini’s models. Instead, they are held for just 72 hours and then deleted.
Personalized Memory: From Manual to Automatic
Previously, Gemini required users to instruct it to remember specific details. Now, once enabled via the settings under Personal Context, the feature is turned on by default in the Gemini 2.5 Pro version—rolling out initially in select countries before expanding further.
Gemini will now unprompted recall preferences such as favorite topics, writing styles, or past interests. For example, asking for suggestions related to a previous topic like Japanese culture might now surface related new ideas, such as themed content suggestions.
That being said, users retain full control: they can disable memory via the "Your past chats with Gemini" toggle within the app’s settings. This ensures personalization remains optional and reversible.
Privacy Meets Convenience
In addition to memory upgrades, Google has rebranded the Gemini Apps Activity setting as Keep Activity. When enabled, user-uploaded content like files and photos may contribute to improving Gemini and other services—but only if users give explicit consent. The setting remains off by default, and users who keep it disabled will stay excluded from such data-sharing loops.
Temporary Chats complement memory features by offering data-free conversation paths. These ephemeral interactions are excluded from personalization, hidden from chat history, and are erased automatically after three days. This makes them ideal for sensitive or exploratory conversations.
