Razorpay, NPCI and OpenAI Introduce Agentic Payments via ChatGPT at GFF 2025

India’s digital payments ecosystem took a significant leap forward as Razorpay, NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India), and OpenAI jointly unveiled agentic payments on ChatGPT during the Global Fintech Fest 2025 in Mumbai. The partnership introduces a first-of-its-kind integration of conversational artificial intelligence with India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI), enabling users to conduct financial transactions directly through AI-powered agents within ChatGPT.

The initiative positions India at the forefront of AI-driven financial innovation, combining OpenAI’s large language model capabilities with NPCI’s payments infrastructure and Razorpay’s fintech expertise. The new solution aims to simplify digital transactions by enabling natural language interactions—allowing users to transfer funds, check balances, and make payments through conversational prompts rather than traditional manual inputs.

According to Razorpay, this marks a turning point in how Indians experience digital finance. The integration of OpenAI’s conversational AI with UPI makes the transaction process more intuitive and inclusive, especially for first-time digital users. With agentic AI, payments can now be executed securely through voice or chat commands, authenticated by UPI protocols.

Demonstrated live at the event, the feature enables a user to simply say or type “Pay ₹500 to Ananya for groceries,” and the AI agent processes the command, verifies UPI credentials, and completes the transaction—all within ChatGPT’s secure environment. This is achieved through agentic intelligence, where AI systems autonomously handle multi-step tasks, manage context, and ensure compliance.

A spokesperson from Razorpay explained that the collaboration brings together “the power of conversational intelligence and India’s world-leading UPI infrastructure,” highlighting its potential to reshape financial inclusion. The company added that the partnership aligns with its mission to make payments simpler and smarter for businesses and individuals alike.

OpenAI’s integration within the payments layer of ChatGPT introduces a new paradigm for conversational commerce. Unlike conventional chatbots or payment gateways, these AI agents can reason, remember user context, and take independent actions within a defined framework. This elevates the experience from static command-based payments to dynamic interactions where AI can proactively assist users—for example, by reminding them of bill payments, detecting recurring transfers, or suggesting budgeting options.

Industry observers view the collaboration as a major milestone for India’s fintech sector, combining the efficiency of automation with the accessibility of everyday language. NPCI’s role ensures that the system remains compliant with India’s robust digital payments standards while scaling to millions of users through UPI’s extensive network.

An NPCI representative said the initiative aligns with India’s “Digital Payments Vision 2030,” which emphasizes inclusivity, innovation, and security. By embedding UPI within AI-driven interfaces, the partnership is expected to make digital payments more accessible to non-tech-savvy consumers, particularly in Tier II and Tier III cities.

At the Global Fintech Fest 2025, the demonstration drew attention from both the banking and technology sectors for its seamless integration of artificial intelligence into a regulated financial system. OpenAI engineers showcased how agentic systems like ChatGPT can interact directly with UPI APIs through secure protocols, ensuring no sensitive information is stored within AI systems.

Industry experts believe this could mark the beginning of a new phase in India’s fintech evolution—one where AI becomes a direct participant in financial operations. The collaboration is also expected to accelerate the emergence of “agentic fintech ecosystems”, where AI not only facilitates transactions but also assists in compliance, fraud detection, and customer service automation.

According to reports from the event, the solution’s pilot rollout will focus on enabling businesses and freelancers to streamline payments through conversational interfaces. Razorpay will oversee integration support for merchant partners, while NPCI will manage the underlying transaction rails and security infrastructure. OpenAI, meanwhile, will refine the ChatGPT interface to ensure smooth multilingual support and voice-based interactivity for Indian users.

Razorpay stated that the company plans to expand the platform’s capabilities to support additional AI-driven services such as smart invoicing, expense categorization, and automated reconciliation in future updates. The long-term goal is to create a financial assistant that can handle end-to-end business operations—from generating invoices to confirming payments—powered by AI.

Integrating agentic AI with UPI represents the next logical step toward that future,” he said.

Industry analysts have drawn comparisons between this development and early milestones in digital payments such as the introduction of UPI itself in 2016 and the rise of QR-based transactions. They note that the combination of agentic AI and UPI could redefine digital engagement not just for consumers but also for enterprises managing large-scale transactions.

The integration also underscores India’s growing influence in global fintech innovation. With UPI already expanding internationally through partnerships in countries like Singapore, UAE, and France, experts believe the ChatGPT-embedded payment model could serve as a blueprint for AI-assisted financial ecosystems worldwide.
