Starbucks to Open First India GCC in Chennai

Starbucks is set to establish its first Global Capability Centre in India in Chennai, expanding its technology presence in the country beyond its consumer-facing retail operations.

The US-headquartered coffee company has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Government of Tamil Nadu for the centre. The GCC is expected to create around 800 technology jobs in its first phase, according to the state government.

Starbucks has separately confirmed Chennai as the location for its new India technology hub, which it plans to establish as part of a broader multi-site technology strategy. The company expects recruitment for the facility to begin in the first quarter of 2027.

The Chennai hub will support Starbucks' global business and work with technology and business teams across the company. Over time, Starbucks also plans to bring some work currently handled by third-party service providers in-house, building internal technology capabilities to support its employees, stores and customers.

According to Starbucks Chief Technology Officer Anand Varadarajan, the company considered factors including Chennai's technology talent pool, talent retention and its ability to support the company's long-term business requirements while selecting the location.

The Chennai operation will become part of Starbucks' broader technology network rather than function as a standalone unit. Its teams are expected to work alongside the company's existing technology operations across locations including Seattle, Nashville, London and Hong Kong.

Starbucks said it remains in the early stages of setting up the hub. Planning around local recruitment, office readiness and operating processes will take place over the coming months, with further details expected as the project develops.

The technology centre will be separate from Starbucks' retail operations in India. The company's cafes in the country are operated through Tata Starbucks, its joint venture with Tata Consumer Products.

The announcement adds Starbucks to a growing list of multinational companies expanding their GCC presence in Chennai. Recent investments and agreements in the city's GCC ecosystem include companies such as Walgreens, Chubb, EY, Nordex and Sigma Technology.

Global capability centres in India have increasingly expanded beyond traditional back-office operations into areas such as software development, data, artificial intelligence, research and development, finance and other specialised business functions.

For Starbucks, the Chennai hub represents an expansion of its global technology organisation in India, with the company looking to build more technology capabilities internally while connecting teams across its international operations.
