Qualcomm Acquires Modular, Secures BMW Deal

Qualcomm has strengthened its position in the automotive AI market through the acquisition of UK-based software company Modular and a new partnership with BMW, expanding its ambitions in intelligent vehicle computing and AI-powered driving technologies.

The acquisition of Modular brings advanced compiler and AI software expertise into Qualcomm's automotive portfolio. Modular is known for developing AI infrastructure tools, including the Mojo programming language, which is designed to improve the performance and efficiency of artificial intelligence applications. Qualcomm said the acquisition will enhance its ability to optimise AI workloads across edge devices, including connected vehicles, smartphones and industrial systems.

The move comes as automakers increasingly shift towards software-defined vehicles that rely on artificial intelligence for advanced driver assistance systems, digital cockpits, in-car assistants and autonomous driving capabilities. By integrating Modular's technology into its Snapdragon Digital Chassis platform, Qualcomm aims to deliver faster AI inference, improved software performance and greater efficiency for automotive customers.

Alongside the acquisition, Qualcomm announced that BMW Group will adopt its Snapdragon Digital Chassis platform to power the German automaker's next generation of intelligent vehicles. The collaboration will see Qualcomm provide high-performance computing systems capable of supporting advanced driver assistance, AI-powered cockpit experiences, connectivity and cloud-enabled vehicle services.

BMW's next-generation vehicle architecture, known as Neue Klasse, is expected to feature significantly more computing power and software-driven capabilities than previous models. Qualcomm's automotive platform will contribute to enabling AI features that can process data from cameras, sensors and onboard systems in real time, supporting safer and more personalised driving experiences.

The announcements reinforce Qualcomm's strategy of expanding beyond its traditional smartphone chip business into high-growth AI segments. Automotive has become one of the company's fastest-growing businesses as global vehicle manufacturers increase investments in connected and intelligent mobility.

According to Qualcomm, its automotive design-win pipeline has continued to expand as automakers seek integrated hardware and software platforms capable of supporting AI applications throughout a vehicle's lifecycle. Modern vehicles increasingly require high-performance processors capable of handling infotainment, navigation, voice assistants, over-the-air software updates and autonomous driving functions simultaneously.

The acquisition of Modular also reflects the growing importance of software optimisation in AI deployment. As generative AI and large language models become more common in edge computing environments, efficient software frameworks are becoming as critical as specialised AI chips. Modular's compiler technology is expected to help Qualcomm improve performance while reducing computing costs and power consumption across multiple product categories.

Industry analysts view software-defined vehicles as one of the largest growth opportunities for semiconductor companies. Automakers are increasingly building centralised computing architectures that replace dozens of individual electronic control units with fewer, more powerful AI processors capable of managing multiple vehicle functions.

The BMW collaboration further strengthens Qualcomm's competitive position in automotive semiconductors, where it competes with companies including Nvidia, Intel's Mobileye and several emerging AI chip developers. As AI becomes a defining component of next-generation vehicles, partnerships between semiconductor companies and global automakers are expected to accelerate.
