Amazon Web Services has introduced the AWS Well-Architected Agent in public preview, an AI-powered service designed to analyse customers' cloud environments and recommend changes across cost, security, performance and resilience.
The agent is built around the AWS Well-Architected framework and is intended to reduce reliance on manual architecture reviews and generic checklists. It examines infrastructure configurations, resource utilisation and application topology before comparing them with AWS Well-Architected best practices across more than 65 AWS services.
Customers can provide the agent with business objectives and application context, allowing it to prioritise recommendations based on their potential impact and the effort required to implement them. Organisations can also choose which AWS accounts, regions and optimisation areas the agent should monitor.
Recommendations are provided at three levels. The system can flag issues affecting individual resources, including their potential dollar impact where applicable, identify findings spanning multiple resources within an application, and suggest broader architectural changes. For architecture-level recommendations, it can generate Infrastructure as Code changes to help align environments with AWS best practices.
AWS is also giving customers several ways to act on the findings. The agent can provide console-based instructions, updated Infrastructure as Code templates and AWS Command Line Interface commands. Recommendations can also be integrated into existing development and operations workflows through APIs.
The service can review infrastructure before deployment. Developers can upload projects created using Terraform, AWS CloudFormation or AWS Cloud Development Kit and have the architecture analysed against a selected Well-Architected lens. AWS said this could help teams identify potential issues before workloads move into production.
After an agent profile is created, resource and application recommendations are expected to be generated within 24 hours. The findings are periodically updated as the agent continues assessing the configured environment.
AWS has cautioned that the recommendations are generated using generative AI and may contain errors or incomplete information. Customers remain responsible for evaluating the suggestions within their own environments and applying appropriate oversight before making changes.
The existing AWS Well-Architected Tool will remain available for organisations that want to manually evaluate cloud architectures or use their own custom lenses.
During the preview, AWS Well-Architected Agent is available through AWS Support in US East (N. Virginia), US East (Ohio) and US West (Oregon). Customers can onboard workloads from any AWS commercial region, provided they have an AWS Support plan.
