The government has given UIDAI Chief Executive Officer Saurabh Vijay additional charge as CEO of the IndiaAI Mission, marking an important leadership move at a time when India is accelerating its national artificial intelligence strategy.
Vijay, a 1998-batch Indian Administrative Service officer of the Maharashtra cadre, recently assumed charge as CEO of the Unique Identification Authority of India, which manages Aadhaar, one of the world's largest digital identity programmes. His additional role at the IndiaAI Mission places him at the centre of two key technology-led public infrastructure initiatives.
The IndiaAI Mission, approved by the Union Cabinet in March 2024 with an outlay of ₹10,371.92 crore, is aimed at strengthening India's AI ecosystem through compute infrastructure, innovation support, datasets, startups, skilling and safe AI development. The mission is being implemented under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and is viewed as a core pillar of India's ambition to build sovereign AI capabilities.
The leadership change follows the exit of Abhishek Singh, who had earlier served as CEO of the IndiaAI Mission. Vijay's appointment is expected to bring administrative continuity and execution focus as the mission moves from policy design to implementation across multiple components.
A major focus area of the mission is the creation of AI compute capacity for startups, researchers, academic institutions and enterprises. Access to high-performance computing has become a critical requirement for building large language models, generative AI tools and sector-specific AI applications. The government has been working to make such infrastructure more accessible to India's innovation ecosystem.
The mission also seeks to support domestic AI model development, curated datasets, AI application development and responsible AI frameworks. These areas have gained urgency as countries across the world invest heavily in artificial intelligence to strengthen economic competitiveness, public service delivery and digital sovereignty.
Vijay's background in digital public infrastructure is expected to be closely watched by industry stakeholders. UIDAI's experience in managing Aadhaar at national scale gives the agency deep exposure to identity systems, data governance, authentication and citizen-facing technology platforms. While Aadhaar and AI are distinct domains, the broader governance experience may be relevant as India scales trusted AI systems.
For India's technology and startup ecosystem, the appointment comes at a crucial time. AI startups have repeatedly highlighted the need for affordable compute access, clearer procurement pathways, quality datasets and stronger institutional support. The IndiaAI Mission is expected to address some of these gaps and help create a more competitive domestic AI environment.
The development also signals the government's continued focus on aligning artificial intelligence with public interest. As AI adoption grows across healthcare, education, agriculture, financial services, governance and enterprise technology, policy execution will play an important role in determining how widely the benefits of AI are distributed.
India's AI strategy is increasingly being shaped around both innovation and inclusion. The mission aims to ensure that AI capabilities are not limited to large corporations but are also available to startups, researchers and public sector institutions. This approach could be important for developing India-specific AI solutions across languages, sectors and population groups.
The additional charge given to Vijay is therefore significant beyond a routine administrative appointment. It places a senior digital governance official in charge of a mission that could influence the next phase of India's technology development.
As global competition in AI intensifies, the effectiveness of the IndiaAI Mission will depend on timely execution, industry collaboration and transparent access to infrastructure. Vijay's new role is expected to be central to that process as India looks to strengthen its position in the global AI landscape over the coming years, particularly across public services and enterprise innovation nationwide.
