Aadhaar Sees Surge in AI-Powered Face Authentications, Hits 15.87 Crore in June
Aadhaar Face Authentications

In a significant uptick powered by artificial intelligence, Aadhaar-based face authentication transactions in India reached a record 15.87 crore in June 2025. According to data from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), this milestone marks a key moment in the country’s ongoing digital transformation and the adoption of AI-enabled authentication systems.

The total number of Aadhaar authentication transactions stood at 229.33 crore in June, up 7.8% from the previous month. Of this, biometric and OTP-based authentications continued to lead, but face authentication—largely driven by AI—saw the most dramatic growth. The surge reflects the government's push to streamline identity verification while improving ease of access and security in both public and private sector services.

AI-Powered Face Auth: What’s Driving the Growth?

AI algorithms have made face recognition more accurate and efficient, leading to increased adoption in sectors like banking, telecom, public distribution systems, and healthcare. The UIDAI’s face authentication API enables entities to offer contactless services, reducing fraud and enhancing user experience. The recent jump in numbers shows growing public confidence and institutional readiness to integrate facial authentication in routine operations.

Aadhaar’s Expanding Footprint

Since its inception, Aadhaar has issued over 1.37 billion unique IDs. In June alone, more than 21.24 crore e-KYC transactions were performed, a 4.3% rise from May, with the cumulative e-KYC count nearing 1,680 crore. The e-KYC process, which is paperless and consent-based, allows service providers to verify identities digitally, speeding up customer onboarding and reducing paperwork.

The Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AePS) also recorded 14.58 crore transactions in June, underlining its relevance in promoting financial inclusion across rural and underserved regions.

India’s AI Authentication Push

With rapid urbanization and increasing digital literacy, India’s reliance on AI-backed technologies for governance and service delivery is growing. Aadhaar’s role in this shift is pivotal. From welfare schemes to fintech applications, the system’s AI integration is being viewed as a model for scalable, secure identity verification.

As UIDAI continues to upgrade its infrastructure and APIs, experts anticipate further increases in face-based authentications. With India's massive population and expanding digital economy, the country’s AI-powered identity ecosystem is poised for deeper integration across industries.
