OpenAI has appointed Uday Ruddarraju as its Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Compute, reinforcing its leadership team as the company continues to expand the infrastructure required to build and deploy increasingly advanced artificial intelligence models. The appointment comes as AI companies race to secure the computing capacity, networking systems and data centre infrastructure needed to support the next generation of frontier AI models.
Ruddarraju announced the move in a LinkedIn post after completing his first year at OpenAI. Reflecting on the milestone, he said the company's Compute team had spent the past year rapidly bringing new computing capacity online while developing the underlying systems across compute, networking, storage and machine learning required to train frontier models, including GPT-5.6.
He added that OpenAI's long-term objective is to build what he described as the world's largest compute footprint so that frontier AI can reach more users, organisations and workflows. According to Ruddarraju, the company has an extensive infrastructure roadmap ahead, spanning large-scale distributed systems, hardware development, manufacturing and the construction of new data centres involving civil, mechanical and electrical engineering. He also noted that OpenAI is expanding hiring across multiple infrastructure disciplines to support its compute ambitions.
Before joining OpenAI in July 2025 as Head of Compute and Infrastructure, Ruddarraju served as Head of Infrastructure Engineering at Elon Musk's xAI, where he played a key role in developing large-scale AI computing systems. Prior to that, he held engineering leadership positions at Robinhood and eBay, building experience in operating complex, high-performance technology platforms at scale.
His appointment highlights the increasing strategic importance of compute infrastructure in the AI industry. As generative AI models become larger and more sophisticated, companies are investing billions of dollars in graphics processing units (GPUs), networking equipment, storage systems and data centres to meet growing demand for model training and inference. Access to reliable compute resources has emerged as one of the defining competitive advantages among leading AI developers.
OpenAI has been accelerating investments in infrastructure through multiple initiatives, including large-scale data centre projects and partnerships aimed at expanding computing capacity.
