India's push toward AI-driven agriculture has received a fresh boost with IIT Ropar's ANNAM.AI Centre of Excellence and global agricultural innovation company Syngenta announcing a strategic collaboration to develop AI-powered solutions aimed at improving productivity, climate resilience and decision-making for millions of Indian farmers.
The partnership was formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed during the Bharat Innovates platform in Nice, France, an event inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron. The collaboration brings together IIT Ropar's artificial intelligence research capabilities and Syngenta's agronomic expertise to create advanced crop intelligence models and digital advisory tools tailored to India's agricultural landscape.
ANNAM.AI is India's first Centre of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence in Agriculture, established at IIT Ropar under the Ministry of Education. The initiative aims to build a nationwide open-data agricultural intelligence ecosystem capable of delivering free, hyperlocal and multilingual AI-powered advisories to farmers. The platform integrates crop intelligence, weather information, pest surveillance and field-level insights to support precision farming and improve climate resilience.
As part of the partnership, Syngenta will contribute its expertise in crop science and agronomy to help develop AI models for crop health monitoring, pest forecasting and heat stress prediction. The organisations will also jointly build AI-driven decision support systems designed to help farmers make informed choices on crop management, input usage and climate adaptation.
The initiative is expected to address some of the biggest challenges facing Indian agriculture, including unpredictable weather, pest outbreaks and declining productivity. According to Syngenta, more than 80 percent of India's estimated 150 million farming households operate on less than two hectares of land, making access to timely, data-driven agricultural intelligence particularly valuable for smallholder farmers.
The collaboration also aligns with India's broader vision of building digital public infrastructure for agriculture. ANNAM.AI is supported by the Government of India and works with a consortium of institutions including IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi and AIIMS, along with global technology partners such as Google. The platform is designed as an open ecosystem that enables researchers, government agencies and industry partners to develop AI solutions using shared agricultural data.
Officials associated with the initiative said AI-powered agricultural intelligence can help farmers receive personalised recommendations based on local weather, soil conditions and crop health. These recommendations are expected to support better irrigation planning, pest management, fertiliser application and overall farm productivity while reducing input costs and improving sustainability.
The partnership builds on ANNAM.AI's ongoing efforts to expand AI adoption in agriculture. Earlier this year, the centre announced the deployment of AI-enabled weather stations and launched programmes to train students, rural youth and agricultural professionals in AI applications for farming. It has also introduced Hackcore 2026, a national AI hackathon organised with Google and Syngenta to encourage innovation in crop health, soil intelligence and climate-resilient agriculture.
Industry observers view the collaboration as another step in integrating artificial intelligence into India's agricultural sector at scale. Rather than focusing solely on individual applications, the partnership aims to build foundational digital infrastructure that can support a wide range of AI-powered services for farmers across diverse agro-climatic regions.
As climate variability and resource constraints continue to reshape farming practices, the collaboration between IIT Ropar, ANNAM.AI and Syngenta reflects growing efforts to combine artificial intelligence, scientific research and agricultural expertise to improve productivity and resilience across India's farming ecosystem.
