This wasn’t some amateur AI trick—experts described the level of sophistication as “alarmingly advanced,” making it clear that deepfakes aren’t just a social media problem anymore.

Deepfake Fraud: Cheating the System One AI Trick at a Time

Universities are also feeling the heat. According to Times Higher Education, deepfakes are now being used to game the admissions process, with students altering their appearances and voices in real time to cheat in remote interviews. Admissions officers in the UK have started flagging cases where applicants appear to be lip-syncing their responses, suggesting that AI-generated avatars are being used to pass language proficiency tests.

This wave of deepfake deception is forcing institutions to rethink how they verify identities online. As one academic expert put it, “If we can’t even trust video calls anymore, what does that mean for the future of remote work, online learning, or even telemedicine?”

Researchers at the University of Bath are also finding positive applications. Their recent study suggests that deepfake training videos—where individuals watch AI-generated versions of themselves performing skills like public speaking—can boost confidence and speed up learning. This approach is already being tested in corporate training programs, raising the possibility that deepfakes could transform education and skill development.

Fighting Back: The Global Deepfake Battle

Governments and tech companies aren’t sitting idly by. A major 2025 study published on arXiv examined the latest deepfake detection techniques, showing that AI tools are now being trained to analyze facial microexpressions and voice inconsistencies to spot fakes. However, as detection improves, so does the sophistication of AI-generated content, creating a constant game of cat and mouse.

Meanwhile, the European Commission has introduced new measures under the AI Act, placing stricter guidelines on social media platforms to curb the spread of AI-generated misinformation. In the U.S., lawmakers have introduced the DEEPFAKES Accountability Act, aimed at giving law enforcement more resources to track and prosecute those who use deepfakes maliciously.
