IIT ISM Dhanbad & AGI Partner to Build AI Tools

The collaboration aims to combine IIT ISM's expertise in mining, geology and earth sciences with AGI's capabilities in artificial intelligence to create technology that can improve how mineral deposits are identified, analysed and assessed. The initiative is expected to support faster, more accurate and data driven exploration while reducing the time and cost involved in traditional geological surveys.

Under the partnership, researchers will focus on developing AI based solutions capable of processing large volumes of geological, geophysical and geochemical data. These tools are expected to assist scientists in identifying mineral rich zones, predicting potential deposits and improving exploration planning through machine learning models and advanced data analytics.

Officials associated with the project said the collaboration aligns with India's broader objective of strengthening domestic capabilities in the exploration of critical and strategic minerals. Demand for minerals such as lithium, cobalt, rare earth elements and graphite has been rising globally as countries invest in electric mobility, renewable energy systems and advanced electronics. Improving exploration efficiency is therefore becoming increasingly important for resource security.

The project will also explore the use of artificial intelligence to integrate multiple datasets that are traditionally analysed separately. By combining satellite imagery, historical exploration records, geological maps and field observations, AI models can help researchers identify exploration targets that may otherwise remain undetected. Such technologies have gained traction globally as mining companies seek to improve discovery rates while lowering exploration risks.

The partnership builds on IIT ISM Dhanbad's ongoing efforts to expand research in Mining 4.0 technologies through TEXMiN, the institute's Technology Innovation Hub established under the Department of Science and Technology's National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber Physical Systems. TEXMiN focuses on developing commercially viable technologies for the mining and mineral exploration sector using artificial intelligence, machine learning, drones, robotics, blockchain and satellite imagery.

In recent years, IIT ISM and TEXMiN have signed multiple collaborations with government agencies and industry partners to accelerate digital transformation in mining. These initiatives include projects related to AI enabled mineral prospectivity mapping, predictive modelling, critical mineral exploration and technology translation for the mining ecosystem.

The latest collaboration with AGI is also expected to encourage interdisciplinary research involving experts from mining engineering, applied geology, geophysics, computer science and artificial intelligence. Researchers will work on developing scalable solutions that can eventually support government agencies, public sector enterprises and private mining companies involved in mineral exploration.

Artificial intelligence is increasingly being adopted across the mining value chain, from exploration and resource estimation to operational safety and predictive maintenance. AI driven exploration has the potential to reduce manual interpretation, improve decision making and enable more efficient utilisation of exploration budgets by prioritising high potential locations.

As India continues to strengthen its focus on critical minerals under various national initiatives, collaborations between research institutions and technology organisations are expected to play an important role in accelerating innovation. The IIT ISM Dhanbad and AGI partnership reflects this broader trend of integrating artificial intelligence with earth sciences to support more efficient, technology driven mineral discovery and contribute to the country's long term mineral security objectives.
