Luxury smartphone maker Vertu is positioning artificial intelligence as its latest differentiator with the launch of the Alphafold, a foldable smartphone priced from $6,880 that combines premium materials with an AI-powered assistant designed for business leaders. Rather than competing with mainstream smartphone brands on consumer features, the company is targeting executives who want AI integrated into their daily workflows.
The UK-founded brand, known for its handcrafted luxury devices, says the Alphafold is built around its proprietary Hermes AI Agent. The assistant is designed to help users analyse business documents, review spreadsheets, plan travel, organise schedules and automate routine tasks across multiple applications. Vertu positions the device as an AI companion aimed at improving productivity for senior executives rather than serving as a conventional smartphone assistant.
The company's strategy reflects a broader shift in the smartphone industry, where manufacturers are increasingly using AI capabilities as a key selling point. While companies including Samsung, Google and Apple have focused on bringing AI features to mainstream consumers, Vertu is targeting a niche premium segment by combining luxury craftsmanship with enterprise-focused AI services.
A recent hands-on evaluation of the device found that Hermes AI performed well in several business-oriented scenarios, particularly when analysing locally stored documents and spreadsheets. The assistant also demonstrated stronger automation capabilities than some competing AI tools by completing multi-step workflows across apps with limited user intervention. However, reviewers noted that the increased autonomy occasionally created uncertainty over when the AI should proceed independently and when it should request user confirmation.
Early versions of the software also experienced issues with file uploads, image analysis and connectivity to Vertu's concierge service. According to the review, the company addressed many of these problems through server-side updates during the testing period, allowing additional AI features to function as intended.
Beyond AI, the Alphafold includes premium hardware specifications such as a foldable display, a battery capable of lasting more than a day under typical use and enterprise-focused security features. Vertu says the device incorporates privacy protections intended for corporate users handling sensitive business information. However, independent verification of some of the company's security claims has yet to be completed.
Despite its AI capabilities, reviewers concluded that the overall hardware experience is comparable to premium foldable smartphones available at significantly lower prices. Features such as wireless charging, commonly available on competing flagship devices, are absent from the Alphafold, making its premium pricing dependent largely on its AI ecosystem, concierge services and luxury positioning rather than hardware alone.
The launch highlights how AI is becoming a key battleground in the premium smartphone market.
