Sarvam AI has begun deploying its Indus CoWork artificial intelligence platform to 2,500 Maharashtra government officials under a two-year agreement valued at ₹11.26 crore, as the state introduces AI-powered tools into administrative workflows.
The platform was launched by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on October 28. It is designed to assist government employees with drafting official documents, reviewing reports, summarising files and accessing information from departmental records.
The Maharashtra government approved the deployment of Sarvam's sovereign AI solutions in August. The agreement covers Indus CoWork and additional applications intended to support government operations and citizen communication.
Indus CoWork provides a workspace where officials can prepare notes and replies, research government policies, translate documents and analyse information. The platform also supports the conversion of scanned records into searchable text.
According to Sarvam AI, the system supports 22 languages, including Marathi, allowing government employees to work with official information across multiple Indian languages.
The platform includes several tools developed for specific administrative requirements. GR Expert enables officials to search Government Resolutions across departments and identify changes to existing resolutions.
Another feature, Email Summariser, is designed to condense official correspondence, while RFP Bid Evaluator assists officials in comparing and assessing tender submissions.
These capabilities are intended to support tasks that typically involve reviewing substantial volumes of documents and information across government departments.
The agreement also includes Samvaad, a voice and WhatsApp-based system designed for citizen outreach. The system is intended to support communication between government departments and citizens through conversational interfaces.
Sarvam's Saaras speech recognition technology and Bulbul text-to-speech models will also be integrated with Maharashtra's MahaAI platform.
The integration brings speech-based AI capabilities into the state's digital infrastructure, alongside tools for document processing and administrative assistance.
Data handling forms another component of the deployment. Sarvam AI said its solutions would operate on secure, audited infrastructure located entirely within India, with government information remaining within the country.
The company also stated that the Maharashtra government would have the ability to inspect the infrastructure hosting the systems.
The arrangement reflects the state's approach to deploying sovereign AI technologies in government operations, particularly where administrative records and official correspondence require data management controls.
While the tools are designed to assist employees with information processing and routine tasks, their effectiveness will depend on implementation across departments and their integration into existing workflows.
The ₹11.26 crore allocation covers the broader package of Sarvam AI solutions over two years, rather than Indus CoWork alone.
The rollout marks a government deployment of Sarvam's AI productivity platform, with 2,500 officials included in the initial implementation.
