AI coding platform Cursor has launched its first country-specific subscription plan in India, marking its biggest push into one of the world's fastest-growing developer markets as it prepares for its proposed acquisition by SpaceX. The new offering, called Cursor Start, is priced at ₹649 per month, significantly below the platform's standard $20 monthly Pro subscription available in other markets.
The launch reflects the growing strategic importance of India for AI developer tools. Cursor said India has become its third-largest market globally and has recorded more than threefold growth in its user base over the past year. The company also described India as home to one of its highest concentrations of power users, making it the first country where it has introduced localised pricing.
According to Simon Green, Cursor's Head of Asia-Pacific and Japan, the decision was driven by both the country's engineering talent and the opportunity to tailor pricing to local market conditions. He said the company saw an opportunity to "right-size" its commercial model and accelerate adoption among Indian developers.
Cursor Start is positioned between the company's Free and Pro plans. The subscription includes access to Cursor's Composer agent, Grok 4.5 integration and cloud-based AI coding agents. However, it does not include premium AI models from OpenAI or Anthropic, which remain exclusive to higher-tier subscriptions.
The move comes as India continues to strengthen its position as a global software development hub. GitHub reported earlier this year that India has more than 27 million developers on its platform, second only to the United States, with more than two million new developers joining in 2026 alone. That expanding talent pool has made the country an increasingly attractive market for AI-powered software development tools.
Cursor's India expansion also arrives ahead of its expected acquisition by SpaceX in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $60 billion. The acquisition, announced earlier this year, is expected to strengthen SpaceX's AI ambitions by combining Cursor's software development expertise with the computing infrastructure built around its AI division. The transaction is anticipated to close later this year, subject to customary conditions.
Industry observers view the India-specific pricing strategy as part of a broader effort to expand Cursor's user base before the acquisition is completed. Rather than relying solely on premium enterprise customers, the company appears to be targeting individual developers and startups by lowering the entry barrier in one of its fastest-growing markets.
The announcement also reflects a wider trend across the AI software industry, where companies are increasingly introducing region-specific pricing models to accelerate adoption in emerging technology markets. As demand for AI-assisted coding continues to grow, India has become a key battleground for global AI developer platforms seeking long-term market share.
With localised pricing now in place, Cursor is positioning itself to deepen its presence among Indian developers while preparing for its next phase under SpaceX ownership. The launch underscores the country's rising importance in the global AI software ecosystem and highlights how pricing strategies are becoming an increasingly important competitive differentiator.
