Google has successfully onboarded key executives and researchers from the AI coding startup Windsurf in a transaction estimated at $2.4 billion. The strategic move follows the collapse of a previously planned $3 billion acquisition by another tech company. Capitalizing on the opportunity, Google negotiated a non-exclusive license for Windsurf’s core technologies and welcomed key members of the team into DeepMind’s operations.

Among the new recruits are co-founder and former CEO Varun Mohan and co-founder Douglas Chen. The rest of Windsurf’s workforce will continue operating independently, with new leadership appointments including Jeff Wang as interim CEO and Graham Moreno as president.

This approach enables Google to integrate high-value talent and technology while avoiding the scrutiny often associated with large-scale acquisitions. At the same time, it provides partial liquidity to Windsurf’s investors while allowing the startup to maintain autonomy.

At the center of the deal is Varun Mohan, a Sunnyvale native and MIT graduate. Before founding Windsurf—originally called Codeium—in 2021, Mohan built cutting-edge infrastructure for companies like LinkedIn, Quora, Databricks, and Nuro. His platform, adopted by more than a million developers globally, supports AI-assisted tasks such as code generation, refactoring, and live execution.
